It’s official. My little girl is four. Not so little now I guess. If you saw my post on planning a fairy party you will probably know that Molly wanted it to be a girly affair. Tutus and wings were obligatory.

I had planned on a subtle woodland fairy theme but Molly was adamant it should be Tinkerbell. The night before her birthday she was not giving up on this idea and I realised I needed to do a mad dash to the nearest Disney store (actually not that near!) to find a set of Tinkerbell fairies. As she slept I transformed my lounge in to our own little bit of Pixie Hollow and we had a lovely little party with family and friends. I thought I would share a few pictures of the party and all the lovely crafty bits we made. Read on for all the details.

The Cake Table

As a cake baker I always feel a bit of pressure to create an AMAZING cake for the girls. In reality I normally run out of time. I also favour buttercream cakes to full on icing so I opted to create a tall cake in a green ombre buttercream. I then made little meringue kisses (super easy I promise!) to decorate the top with and added a little Tinkerbell figurine. Yes, I could have crafted it out of sugar paste but in honesty I have neither the time nor inclination! The cake was a yummy tall number with four alternate layers of berry sponge and white chocolate chip sponge. All sandwiched together with raspberry jam and white chocolate buttercream. Seriously tasty.

In addition I made a batch of chocolate cupcakes which I went rather old school with making chocolate button hedgehogs. I also covered some with red icing to make little toadstools. Finally I made a batch of Dew Drops (aka mini meringues) which rather hilariously may have had a touch too much food colouring in as they turned everyones mouth blue! They quickly got taken away from the children as it was rather messy.

I wanted to create a little cake display table but didn’t want to use something too large that meant I had to bake for days to fill it. The top of one of our lounge cupboards was the perfect spot and as it sits in the alcove I was able to decorate the whole area.

I strung up some pretty gold garlands and large fans from Ginger Ray to create a backdrop for the table. I then added different cake stands on which to place the treats and main cake itself. In amongst I placed a few logs and my favourite cute little woodland Schleich animals. There were the loveliest blooms from my local florist. I opted for a mixture of pretty flowers, sea holly and foliage with some pussy willow thrown in for good measure.

Of course there were then the fairies who came to play.

The Decorations

I used everyone’s favourite letter garlands to form different phrases and sayings throughout the room. From ‘Faries Welcome’ on the door to ‘Pixie Hollow’ on the fireplace.

Molly and my sister spent an afternoon crafting to form some beautiful garlands. My absolute favourite was the pine cone garland which was unbelievably simple to make. We had collected some pine cones on our walks to school and Molly then painted them in all her favourite colours. Whilst the paint was still wet she sprinkled on glitter and we strung them on some cotton. These could be made for any colour scheme and would be perfect for Christmas too.

A similar idea was done with feathers. You could collect these or I bought a pack from Hobbycraft for about £1. We applied glue to one end and then sprinkled with glitter and attached some pretty gems.

The Games

Rather than giving out party bags I arranged a mini ‘Lost Things’ treasure hunt for the little’s. For those who haven’t been subjected to Tinkerbell yet, Lost Things, are all the treasures that wash up from the mainland in to Pixie Hollow.

First off the children had to create their own personal treasure chests. I bought some little cardboard chests from Hobbycraft for the bargain price of £1. I then found some leaf and woodland animal stickers, flowers and glittery letters. Each child was free to stick to their hearts content. It passed a bit of time and even the really young loved making their own designs.

Once the treasure chests were ready they set out on their lost things hunt. On the wall I had strung some ribbon with all the items they needed to find. Choccy treats, trinkets and coins were all waiting somewhere in the room. As they were all very small I kept the hiding places simple and they had so much fun filling their boxes with all the goodies.

It was great little game and probably a lot more fun and a lot cheaper than the normal party bags.

The Outfits

It wouldn’t be a fairy party without a frilly tutu. Molly already had a lovely pink dress that she was adamant she would wear but you can find some gorgeous designs in John Lewis or The White Company. Alice raided our dressing up box for a fairy costume of her own.

At 4 Molly is already LOVES accessories and added some sparkly gold wings and a fabulous floral crown. The wings were actually from this set from Monsoon which is just the sweetest. My sister is the queen of fancy dress and so bought along a whole basket full of floral headdresses, wooland animal ears and general amazingness. We placed the basket in the lounge for everyone to raid for the duration of the party. Needless to say there were a lot of floral crowns being warn by all the adults.

We had such a fun day and Molly was thoroughly spoilt. Have any of you got any children’s parties coming up? Any ideas I should know about for next year?
