I’m a big fan of wall stickers for the girl’s rooms. They are such a simple way to update a wall and are often a lot cheaper than wallpaper. I also love that they are less permanent so can easily be changed as and when required. Not that I ever have, far too lazy for that!!

When we redecorated Molly’s room a few years back I dallied over many a gorgeous wallpaper design but after much deliberation I opted for wall stickers. I loved the bold graphical styles and the way you could transform a room in minutes (almost!) to create a whole new look.

At the time I was very much in awe of the many rooms I saw on Pinterest with evenly spaced stickers creating a grid like repeating pattern. You could also opt for a more random pattern if you like but I am a girl of order and so repeating it was. I also always find that a random pattern never looks random when I try to create it and I’m left wishing I’d placed things in different orders.

There are just so many gorgeous designs around. Molly’s dots are by Made of Sundays which you can buy direct or via lots of UK suppliers. Check out their animal door stickers. All the heart eyes. I also love The Modern Nursery, Bobby Rabbit and This Modern Life. Mama’s and Papas are also leading the way on the high street and have cuteness overload at the moment. This bear is a definite favourite but I am also tempted to try their self adhesive wallpaper. I feel it may be a revelation.

I’ll bring you all a post on my best Wall Sticker finds very soon.

However when I applying the stickers I was unsure of the best method of getting them completely evenly spaced. In the end I found an amazing trick on good old Google so I thought I would share the two methods I’ve used over the years.

First up a couple of pointers before you apply the stickers:

  • If you are applying to freshly painted walls make sure the paint is completely dry. You need to ideally leave for at least a week.
  • Make sure the walls are clean and dust free.
  • If you wash the walls down make sure they are dry before applying.
  • {The Spirit Level Method – Grid}

    What You Will Need

    A long spirit level, ideally with built in measure
    A tape measure
    A pencil

    What To Do

    1. Measure your wall.
    2. Draw a rough diagram on a piece of paper adding the dimensions.
    3. Plot how you want the stickers to look. E.g. Are they in a straight line or will alternate lines be offset in a grid pattern?
    4. Work out how far apart you want each sticker to be positioned. I would recommend 30cm as a minimum but this will depend on the size of both your stickers and your wall.
    5. Start in the bottom corner of your wall and using your measurements from your plan make your first pencil dot. For example 30cm in from the side and 30cm up from the skirting.
    6. From here work upwards using your spirit level to ensure the next pencil mark is exactly in line.
    7. Repeat across the wall until you have a grid of pencil dots.
    8. Carefully apply your stickers to all your dots.
    9. Alternatively you could use a chalkline to create a grid of lines across the wall and apply the dots at the intersections.

    {The Spirit Level Method – Offset Grid}

    What You Will Need

    A long spirit level, ideally with built in measure
    A tape measure
    A pencil

    What To Do

    1. Repeat steps 1 to 4 above.
    2. Start in the bottom corner of your wall and using your measurements from your plan make your first pencil dot. For example 30cm in from the side and 30cm up from the skirting.
    3. From here work upwards using your spirit level to ensure the next pencil mark is exactly in line. This time you will want your next dot to be double the distance. Eg. If you plan to leave 30cm between stickers your next dot would be positioned 60 cm upwards. This allows for the row in between. If you find it easier (or less confusing!) you can mark the grid as above but just make sure you only apply stickers to every other mark.
    4. Repeat across the wall until you have a grid of pencil dots.
    5. Carefully apply your stickers to all your dots. Remember if you have marked a full grid to only place the stickers on alternate dots.
    6. Alternatively you could use a chalkline to create a grid of lines across the wall and apply the dots at the intersections.

    {The Cardboard Template Method}

    What You Will Need

    Cardboard (An old cardboard box will do)
    Scissors

    What To Do

    1. Measure your wall.
    2. Work out how far apart you want your dots to be spaced.
    3. Then using your cardboard cut out a square to this size. Make sure all your sides are nice and even and straight.
    4. Position your template so the base touches the bottom of your wall. I used mine in a diamond shape as I wanted the dots to be offset on each line.
    5. All you do then is simply apply your sticker at each point of the template.
    6. Move the template along so the corner is touching the sticker you just applied and repeat.
    7. You can check with a spirit level that the first few are straight but it should be fine.
    8. Keep repeating until the wall is complete.
    9. And if that makes no sense at all this video will explain it better than I can!

    Happy sticking!
