I have always loved Christmas but this year is the first since I was child that I am actually REALLY exited about. Molly is 4 now and has got the Christmas bug. She talks non stop about Santa and is constantly telling her little sister Alice exactly what will be happening. Due to this I want to try and make the house super magical for them. I will fully admit that the Christmas tree went up on the 29th November this year. A good two weeks earlier than we normally would.

I’m hoping to create a mini Santa’s workshop throughout December with all the favourite cute touches and nostalgic elements that I remember from my childhood. I’m thinking old school Santa Claus the movie. Patch the elf, fabulous toy workshops and the magic of Santa’s sleigh. That classic Christmas look full of rich reds and greens, candy canes and cosy throws a plenty. It’s not just about the tree and decorations, it’s all those little touches that make your house truly ready for Christmas. Rock My Family favourites, John Lewis, have everything you need to bring a little bit of magic in to your own home this Christmas.

Tree & Decorations

I’ll start with the Christmas tree as this is the main focal point in our house. As the girls tend to pull at the decorations we found a real tree very quickly lost it’s needles so we are opting for a fabulous fake this year. This Fir with realistic snowdrifts will be an ideal base for all my trinkets and treasures.

When it comes to decorations I’m opting for miniature toys, candy canes and bright baubles. I figure that if the girls are going to take the decorations off they may as well be able to play with them too! This cute little teddy and mouse will be ideal nestled amongst an array of jewel coloured baubles and jingle bells. This beautiful Santa decoration definitely needs to make an appearance too.

I have long been coveting a felt animal head so it seems the perfect time to splash out on a Reindeer head decoration. It will be just perfect in our snug with this little wooden lightup workshop by the hearth. Of course we also need a Santa stop here sign for by the front door.

Children’s Room

In the girl’s bedrooms I want to try and create their own little bit of Christmas cheer. Christmas bedding is a must! This set has a little snowy scene complete with the cutest mice around. They will love having matching bedding for Christmas.

Adding their own miniature tree is something children will adore. Especially if they can choose their own decorations (within reason of course!)

Of course it’s not Christmas without new Pjs to wear come Christmas morning. I will be leaving out a special gift from the elves on Christmas Eve and adore these gorgeous reindeer print sets.

Of course I will need to stock up on plenty of storage for the new toys that are inevitably going to appear from Santa, friends and family. A beautiful wooden toy box would be ideal for everything the elves have made and I will certainly be stocking up on a few of these flexible tubs which are perfect for throwing in barbies and lego aplenty!

If you are likely to have any mini guests over the festive period make sure you have a comfy airbed ready and add this lovely Man in the Moon duvet set.

Each small person in the house will need a lovely stocking to leave out for Santa. John Lewis have some fabulous bright designs like this felted pom pom or this cute presents design.

Kitchen

If you are on hosting duty then getting your kitchen ready is a must. Make sure you have plenty of roasting tins for the turkey and potatoes and also some lovely serving dishes for taking everything to the table. Oven to tableware is ideal for all the accompaniments like stuffing and pigs in blankets. Plus it saves on the washing up!

No one wants to be eating off the children’s plastic plates (believe me I’ve done it!) so make sure you have enough crockery for all your guests. The croft collection has a lovely scandi style that can be used long after the turkey is eaten.

On the table you’ll need some festive linens and finishing touches. I rather like these snowflake table mats and coasters. They are a lovely addition to brighten up the table. Crackers are a Christmas day staple but some sweet extras like these Santa and Polar Bear salt and pepper shakers would be adored by Children.

As well as the main day itself I adore all the Christmas baking and it seems the girls have inherited this love from me. I’ll be making sure we make lots of festive treats and this Mason Cash gingerbread man set is so lovely. It’s the perfect way to keep them occupied and the biscuits double as fabulous gifts for everyone to enjoy.

Lounge

Once the kids are in bed there is nothing better than settling down with a mince pie and a nice glass of mulled wine (or two!). I actually have a winter pair of curtains, mainly as I change my mind on decorating schemes so often, so will be popping up some nice rich red checks at the window for the winter months.

Throws and cushions a plenty are a must. In the lounge you can tone down the wonderland theme for a more grown up take. Warm knitted reindeer cushions, a spot of faux fur and some festive slogan cushions will all be ideal. You will need piles of knitted throws and faux furs to replicate that lovely cosy feeling of Mr and Mrs Claus’ house.

If you are short on space but have lots of guests staying over it may be time to invest in a good sofa bed. Once the girls arrived we lost our spare room so we added a great sofa bed in to the lounge that can double as a guest room once the celebrations have ended.

You also need to make sure you have plenty of seating for all the guests so grab some big floor cushions or bean bags that can easily be moved out of the way when not needed.

Those are my favourite pieces for getting your house Christmas ready. I’m now even more determined to make a fabulous Christmas grotto for the girls this year and hopefully bring a bit of North Pole magic in to our own home.
